What are the Symptoms of Osteoarthritis?
The painful inflammation of the joint is often accompanied by swelling, redness, warmth and discomfort. If the joint or the bone surrounding it is injured, swelling may occur. A veterinarian may perform a spinal x-ray to evaluate for any damage to the nerves and joints. If there is any abnormal finding, or if you pet shows any of the symptoms, your veterinarian may suggest an arthritis blood test, which will provide evidence of the presence of the arthritis bacteria.
What is the Treatment for Canine Osteoarthritis?
The treatment for canine osteoarthritis is chondroitin for dogs and is the same as treating canine arthritis. In both diseases, pain relief is the goal. Chondroitin for dogs is a natural joint supplement. This supplement should be given for 3-4 weeks, to get the most out of it. As usual, it is wise to keep your pet away from too much physical activity for a week or two. If the canine is not active, and is not on a natural supplement, the arthritis bacteria will have a free run. As the canine gets back into the right habits and starts to exercise more, the arthritis infection will lessen.
