A dog is very similar to a television remote that needs to be programmed to work with a TV. Working capabilities are there, but like a remote, a person must help it work with their TV. Dogs are trainable, they just need a caring person to bring out their good traits.
Stay in control as you reward your dog's good behavior. Giving a reward for an appropriate behavior is correct, but do it quickly and move on. While you may be overjoyed with headway you are making, showing excitement causes the dog to become excited and makes you lose control. Remain calm, expect them to be calm, and then award them when appropriate.
You should train your dog to walk properly on his leash. This is important for both the dog's safety, and your own.
Remember to have patience when it comes to training your dog. A patient attitude will make the training process less stressful for the both of you. Remember that your dog really does want to please you, but sometimes he gets confused because he speaks a different language and cannot understand what you are asking.
Training should begin with the easier commands. You will both get instant gratification and establish a good foundation which you and your dog can build on. In doing so, you will see more consistent and positive results.
Training Sessions
Your training sessions should be very short. Dogs can't concentrate for long periods of time, so long training sessions are pointless. If you want to train more, make sure to include play breaks for your dog.
Split treats into bite-sized pieces to keep rewards from affecting your dog's daily diet, weight or overall health. Many people overlook treats when considering the animal's diet, but they certainly add up, especially during active training.
When you are walking your dog, a good tip in training him is to be alert for other dogs. Some dogs tend to be aggressive, and it's not safe to assume that every dog owner is responsible. Refrain from walking near dogs that are aggressive.
Does your dog have a problem with biting furniture or even other people? If so, then spray them with a mist of water. This teaches them that these behaviors are unacceptable. Before long, your dog will no longer display these behaviors, and will be obedient and playful.
Don't forget to praise good behavior. Smile and get excited and make your dog know that he is doing something you like. Having these same reactions to bad behavior will teach your dog that whatever they are doing is okay.
Once you've figured out how this is done, then it is only a matter of time in which you will be able to teach your dog these tricks. Your dog will love making you happy just as much as you love seeing your dog behave.
