Many dogs are sentenced to a life in a shelter when things get too stressful at home. This is avoidable in most cases. Any dog can be trained to become well-behaved, healthy and happy. Transforming a dog into this type of companion can actually be easy, as long as you spend the effort and time necessary.
When you verbally correct your dog, do it quickly and concisely. Do not waste time ranting about how bad your dog is. Just say no and show them the behavior you expect. Also make sure that the volume of your voice commands their attention and lets them know that you mean business.
Keep your dog on a healthy diet. There are many reasons why bad diets are bad news for your pet. It can make your dog behave badly and is not good for their health. Feeding your dog quality food can greatly affect what you accomplish during training sessions.
You must be willing to invest the time required for practice if you want your training to be successful. It will take up to 50 repetitions to learn a new command. Continue trying the same command and be patient, your dog will get it.
As you train the dog, patience is essential. You will not get frustrated or mad and neither will your pet. Bear in mind that your dog wants nothing more than to please you; however, your language is somewhat confusing to him.
Early in your training, teach your new pup to “leave it.” This command tells him to drop the item and step away. You can use this command for a number of purposes. For example, it is used to prevent the dog from chewing on something or even to guide them out of harm's way.
Try to limit the amount of accidents your dog has while toilet training. Learn to read your dog and anticipate his needs. Pacing and whining are common signs. If you see any of these signs, get him outdoors! Head outdoors to the assigned potty spot right away. Praise your dog when he does his business where he is supposed to. Eventually, he will learn to ask to go out.
Be consistent when training your dog. When many members of a family are working to train a dog, be certain that each person uses identical commands, rewards and discipline. When your dog only needs to understand a single set of directions, it is easier to learn and adopt the desired behaviors.
Use different tones when training your dog. Giving a command or correcting a negative behavior requires an authoritative tone, while praise can be softer. Commands should be clearly stated in a firm tone. Corrections and reprimands must be spoken more firmly, while praise should be delivered in a natural tone.
It is not outside the realms of possibilities to be the proud owner of a well-adjusted and perfectly trained dog. It's important to pay attention to your dog and their needs. By following these steps you can make your dog a part of the family.
