Some dogs are born naturally perfect, but most of them will need some guidance. Use the following advice and you will end up with a joyful, well behaved dog.
Always give your puppy plenty of toys to chew on to help with teething pain. Otherwise, you might find your shoes becoming chew toys. Instead of allowing it to continue chewing on your important furniture or toys, provide a well-loved chew toy. Puppies sometimes chew objects while going through their teething phase. A wet cloth that has been frozen is perfect for them during this time.
Never chain two dogs too close to each other. Doing so could cause injuries to the dogs if they become entangled in the chains and attempt to free themselves. Particularly in the case of a large dog and a small dog, the animals may get so tangled that the smaller dog has his airway cut off and dies.
If you need to approach a dog that you are not familiar with, approach it slowly and allow it to sniff your hand. Dogs need to familiarize themselves with the smell before they can trust you. When the dog knows your scent, he is better able to trust you and follow given commands.
Remember it is important to be patient when you are training your dog. Patience is the best way to keep your dog from becoming confused and for you to remain calm. Keep in mind that they wish to please you; however, they get confused because they can't understand your language.
One of the very first commands you should teach a new puppy is the “leave it” command, which tells them to drop an item and step back from it. This basic command is extremely helpful when your dog is chewing on something he shouldn't and also helps to keep him away from dangerous items.
Make training with your dog fun. Playing with your dog helps build a stronger bond between dog and human, which encourages the dog to respond positively during training. Training can be enjoyable, but you should still make time just to play with your pet.
Use primary reinforcement when training your dog. This utilizes something the dog loves as a means to reward positive behaviors. You can use food or a nice belly rub as primary reinforcements. Doing this will show your dog alternatives for obtaining what he wants appropriately.
Use the same command for the behavior you want him to demonstrate. Use his or her name when giving a command. Using their name will help to personalize your command. Dogs usually respond to names immediately and they know you need them to be attentive.
To ensure your dog's good behavior, keep up its training throughout its life. Your dog isn't completely trained once he stops being a puppy. By continually reinforcing obedient behaviors and disciplining negative behaviors, you will have a dog that behaves appropriately.
Do not give up, even if your pet is currently running wild in your home. It just takes some knowledge and patience. Use the tips you've learned here to minimize the anxiety and maximize your results.
