Every dog requires training to some extent in order to learn what to do and of course, what not to do. This article has some helpful advice on how to train your dog.
When using a crate to train your dog, you'll want to make sure that you select the right size. Keep in mind that puppies grow big. Choose a crate that is a good enough size for an adult for when your puppy grows. At full size your dog should be able to move around without feeling too constricted.
When training your dog, try to avoid reinforcing negative behavior. Don't give praise or treats to your dog if it does something wrong. For example, don't rub your dog's head when they jump up at you and when you come in the door if you don't want them to jump.
Your dog must realize that you are the leader of the pack. Your dog must see you as a leader, or they will not follow your commands. Never allow your dog pull on the leash while you are on a walk.
Come up with a phrase that you can teach your puppy during house training. When you take your puppy outside, say “go potty” to them so they will eventually associate the phrase with going to the bathroom outside.
Remember to enjoy the time spent with your dog during training. A sense of play brings you and your dog together. This bond makes the dog more responsive to your commands and training him easier. Training can be enjoyable, but you should still make time just to play with your pet.
If you say ‘no', your dog should understand that it does not need a response. If you are training a pet, find a positive way to reward them. Using the word “no” will not help your dog learn that a behavior is unacceptable. There is a difference in all dogs and training should be customized.
Take extra care with the tone you use whenever you discipline your dog. Your dog is sensitive to the tone of your voice and can sense your feelings based on it. Back up your discipline with a stern, but not angry, tone of voice to communicate your displeasure.
Do not fatten your dog by being mindful of just how many treats he gets in one day. When trying to feed their dogs a healthy diet, many people do not count the calories in the treats. These can add up fast.
Disobedient or untrained dogs can easily make a mess of your house and threaten your sense of well-being. With this advice you should be able to get your dog under control.
